The Mary Book Introduction
This is a presentation of the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in God's plan of redemption for the world through His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. This discussion about Mary's role is presented primarily from a Biblical perspective but also identifies the need for and the history of the development of the teachings on her. The major doctrines on Mary are here presented through Old and New Testament scriptural references and are explored in the simple way of one who loves and searches and is limited in formal theological training.
This treatise begins with an overview of the difficulty some Christians have with devotion to Mary. It includes the issue of praying to those dead in Christ, the benefit of holy objects and places as well as how attitudes and biases toward spiritual practices and faith can inhibit learning the fullness of Truth.
The principal teachings on Mary that follow this overview are: 1) the Virginity; 2) the Maternity; 3) the relationship between Jesus and Mary; 4) Mary, the Spouse of the Holy Spirit (which includes a reference to St. Joseph's role); 5) the Assumption; 6) the Immaculate Conception; 7) Co-Redemptrix; and 8) Mediatrix of all Graces.
Two themes that permeate this book are first, the significance of Mary's profound faith. This includes the searching out, defining and clarifying the teachings. The second theme conveys how Mary is a powerful instrument in Godís hands who never ceases to magnify the Lord for all Christians who are open to learning from her. The idea of the significance of coming to God by faith is explored in some detail. In doing this, a hierarchy of beliefs is identified indicating that belief in the harder doctrines of faith, such as the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, bring greater glory to God by those who believe.
A final summary will give a rationale as to why devotion to Mary is not just a pious practice for some but a necessary part of the normal Christian life for all. This will include reference to the charismatic movement, spiritual warfare, development of Marian doctrine and Church unity.
In many ways this treatise is only a series of points that lack a detailed fleshing out, a kind of skeleton, you might say, on which the reader must place sinews, muscles and flesh. The Holy Spirit Himself will supply the body to this book according to the gifts He gives each person. Many will go beyond what is written here to more profound insights but it is the Spirit that will put the flesh on the body of this work. Therefore, I encourage the reader to take time to consider and think about the various points made in this book asking the Holy Spirit for enlightenment. Then, as you ponder them in your heart, in the pattern of Mary (Lk 2:19 & 51), you will achieve the level of understanding the Lord wants you to have of each of these teachings.
Some of the material presented here may be entirely new to the reader or it may offer a different perspective on what is already known. In either of these cases you may need time to ponder what is presented here in order to become familiar with the ideas and see the full implications of what is suggested. In this effort I pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you to new heights of wisdom, understanding and love of God as you consider the material presented.
One final point; the material contained in this treatise, as I hope the reader will find, is a flaming sword against the evil plans of Satan. Because of this, Satan will try every means to prevent you, from being nourished by this tiny spiritual morsel. The reasons why Satan does not want you to acquire the knowledge sketched out in this book, or any other book that reveal Mary's role in God's plan of redemption, I hope will become clearer as you read. I ask you to resolve now to read carefully and thoughtfully through to the end, resisting the discouraging darts of the Evil One.
If Satan does not succeed in discouraging you from perusing the material contained in this book his second line of defence will likely be an attempt to influence you to misunderstand or misinterpret what is written herein. However, I believe that if you read reflectively and prayerfully to the end Satan will not succeed in distorting what this treatise sets out to present.
I believe that your taking up of this little book into your hands is no accident but that God has chosen you to read and understand what it contains. May it be the beginning of a new life in the Spirit for you, a confirmation of your faith and a consolation to you. As your heart opens or reopens to what is presented here may GOD THE FATHER, THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE LORD, JESUS CHRIST BE PRAISED!
